Letter from the President

The International Center for Journalists hosts a reception for their new Knight International Journalism Fellows at the Newseum on Tuesday, June 23, 2009 in Washington, DC.

I started this journey with a start-up grant, a dedicated team of volunteers and the drive to make positive change in the community.  I have come a long way since then!  My husband, William C. Featherstone and I decided to launch a nonprofit organization that would have the capacity and resources to provide lasting results to the underprivileged members of our society.

We feel passionately about many issues: immigrants should have access to quality education for economic empowerment; education should be affordable and accessible and minorities should have the financial resources to travel overseas.

My first overseas trip to Salamanca, Spain was life changing and shaped me into the person that I am today.  It gave me a global perspective, a curiosity for languages and international cultures and an itch to continue traveling abroad.

Since then, I have traveled to 14 countries throughout Latin America spanning from Bolivia to Guatemala to Peru to France.  My experiences abroad inspire me to work hard to ensure that there is an outlet for underprivileged students to obtain scholarships to travel internationally without financial strain and burden.

William and I live by our mantra: “to whom much is given, much is required.” If we can change our corner of the world and we inspire others to do their part—many lives will be changed and we will ultimately make a difference in our nation.

We have the compassion and the conviction to change our community by empowering and inspiring the less fortunate to achieve success.
